I have always wanted to see the Deming rock show. I’ve heard how big it is and thought at some point I would get to attend. This year not only did I attend, I even got to go out on a dig.
I got into town on Friday to the worst windstorm. I went to the rock show but they had to close up the booths on the outside due to the high winds. Over sixty miles an hour. So there were only a few booths.
I went to signed up for the dig. There were three to choose from and the lady I was talking to had a unicorn hat on so right off I knew she believed in magic lol. I asked her which she would go on if it was her that was going. She told me her dig story out at Big Diggins. So what the heck let’s do it. She also said not to expect too much since the backhoe had broken and they hadn’t been able to bring in more since the last group of people. No problem since I didn’t even know what to expect to begin with, ha.
The evening brought more wind, rain and hail. Ok so, you’re probably thinking this is a bad thing. I was actually ok with it, knowing how it’s actually cleaning up a few layers of dirt and rock. It was hard to sleep, I was a bit excited.
The next morning, the weather had cleared up. It was actually a beautiful day for digging. It stayed in the mid 60’s.
I found this baby as soon as I started walking up to the dig.
Rock people are pretty friendly so we all just picked a spot and started digging. Talking and comparing rocks. The guides were very cool in showing what to look for and one in particular would come by and drop a few cool rocks he found in our buckets.
The first couple of hours there were quite a few of us, but by the end only the true rock hounds were left. Lol
Big brother kept an eye too. We were only something like 15 miles away from the border.
I found quite a bit of agate, chalcedony and jasper. The fire agate is what I really wanted and that was actually just laying on the ground.
I found a few pieces but this is the only one you can actually see a little fire in. The rest I will have to slowly polish when I get a chance.
As you can see I’ve got a bit to go through.
Here’s a few pretty ones
Planning for next year already. Go early and dig for three days. God willing.
